Uckfield Festival: Uckfield Art Trail

We visit the Uckfield Art Trail

Some of the artists whose work we’d enjoyed at the Brighton and Hove Artists’ Open Houses festival in May are exhibiting at this two-day event at the Uckfield Civic Centre.

On a blazing hot day we escaped Brighton by bus through the countryside to Uckfield

We started at Bridge Cottage, a 14th century riverside house still very much in use, now by photographer Mike Harvey-Penton hosting a range of artists and craftspeople as an addition to the Festival. Noted Sheila Hay’s detailed studies of animals, fruit and flowers and Mike’s landscape photography with occasional digital manipulations

Neatly concealed by scaffolding and rather untroubled by signage, we eventually found the Civic Centre

The wide-ranging show is a true community event, featuring photography, wood engraving, weaving, jewellery, embroidery, ceramics and all forms of painting together with craft production and local children’s art projects over an all too brief two day event

The work is arranged on two floors usually with the artist in residence to meet and chat, some demonstrating their work. Several are offering workshops to share their skills

Several artists remarked that the heat had kept people away – my thought is yes, it’s warm in there, so do the show in bites! It’s well worth the visit, and you only have one day

We enjoyed a pot of tea on the shady breezy terrace outside, looking at the brochure and listening to the folk duo Barber and Taylor

Standout exhibitors for me …

Tina Warren

The mediaeval calligraphy tradition is alive and well here, with accomplished penmanship, illuminated letters and impressive legal documents beautifully created. See the painting “Through the Seasons;” evocative words and images in luminous colours and gold ink on a black background

Laura Morgan

Art and society combine in respectful portraits of people and communities, a world traveller’s photographic study highlighting the fight against human trafficking

Lorna Holdcroft

Painting in watercolour, acrylic and pastel, her mysterious images emerge through rich glowing colour. Loved the “Bronze Horse 1stC BC”

Brenda May

Satisfying and assured powerful abstracts, textured layers and applied detail. Big statements in restrained, faded tones

Sue Petty

RHS silver medallist painter of butterflies, flowers and leaves. Delicate detail closely observed in watercolour and coloured pencil

Ann Knowler

Lavishly detailed pastel landscape and seashore studies as if seen through a film location photographer’s eyes. “Moorland Water in Yorkshire” is the highlight

Franziska Wieser

The ancient art of weaving so relevant today with a flourish of pastel wraps in luxe textured materials. Art to be worn

Julia Maynard

Graphic stylised acrylic seascapes in red, white and blue detailed with textured foam splashes. The teal blue “Midnight Sea”

Philomena Harmsworth

An exuberant joie de vivre powers these flamboyant and energetic oils of music, countryside, cafe society and city life

Keith Pettit

Enthralling little wood engravings of the countryside, architecture and the sea in fresh precise black and white. See the miniature printing press in action. Classes in the basics at the Hive, Lewes, 29th August and 5th September – see www.keithpettit.co.uk for details

Mary Grant

Muted, mysterious landscapes and stormy skies. “In Another Time, In Another Place”

Uckfield Art Trail 2013

Friday 19th July 3 – 9pm and Saturday 20th July 9am – 7pm

… the perfect opportunity to enjoy a showcase of local creative talent, all under one roof!

The ever popular Uckfield Art Trail returns in July, during the last week of the Uckfield Festival at Uckfield Civic Centre, right in the heart of the town, plus the nearby Luxford Centre and the 14th century Bridge Cottage.

Friday 19th July 3 – 9pm, with the official launch from 7pm

Saturday 20th July 9am – 7pm.

Once again, we will be holding the show in Uckfield Civic Centre, . We also have some ‘satellite’ venues taking part this year as well, where more of Uckfield’s local artists will be displaying their arts and crafts.
