First weekend

We visit Brighton and Hove Artists’ Open Houses in the run-up to Christmas 2014

We started our rounds of the Christmas Artists’ Open Houses on one of those gorgeous blue and gold Brighton and Hove winter days.

12: The Claremont

Anne Barrell

Anne Barrell

This boutique hotel set in a Victorian mansion in Hove again hosts a show from large scale works to little prints, candles and cards that runs throughout all floors of the building and into the garden. One of the wantable rooms is open today, too.

We enjoyed complimentary mulled cider or tea with rum, and particularly noticed

Anne Barrell – loved the smoky blue grey ceramics with precious gold shell accents
Ella van Breda – iridescent butterfly prints
James Baker – brooding monochrome charcoal drawing
Louise Dennis – mysterious and dreamlike illustrations referencing fear of the dark

Star Venue 9: 9A Hove Place

Serious and engrossing painting and sculpture are beautifully presented in harmony throughout this terrific apartment. Dainty little pieces and imposing great big statements; the rich textures and earthy tones reminiscent of ancient cultures.

8: Silvia K & Friends ‘Our Room’

Upstairs to this cool, fresh new venue showing smooth ceramics and delicate little sculptural pieces inspired by tools. A modern, enigmatic feel to the work of this group of creative friends.

44: 2 Knoyle

Kate Osborne

Kate Osborne

Terrific variety and inspirations in this 1930s open house with fab shed / ceramics workshop in the garden.

Angela Evans – fun, detailed and colourful kitchen vegetable-inspired ceramic tiles
Donna Davidson – feather wall hangings and glittered trimmings
Kate Osborne – glowing watercolours of birds, bees and animals
Couldn’t see a credit for the cute family of knitted Clangers, but they caught my eye!

Tea and Victoria sponge in the gazebo £2.00.

Star Venue: 38: Glass In Fusion

Stephanie Else

Stephanie Else

Stephanie Else now offers glass workshops and a newly developed website at www.glassinfusion.co.uk.

Standouts included magnificent wall pieces and platters in frozen ocean slices, all bubbles and captured foam, lots of little gift ideas; pretty iridescent jewellery, miniature bowls and light-catching window hangings plus her signature glass snowflakes.

Guest Evelyn Day is also showing some spectacular Chocadyllic chocolate art

36: 99

A hive of creative crafting and making activity, with jewellry, bags, prints, food and skincare gifts, textiles and willow wreaths too.

Highlights:

Jo Brook – silver flower pendants
Nikki Ward – butterflies and birds in 3D flight
Hoity Toity – dainty classically inspired earrings

37: The Dragonfly House

Walk downstairs under the sign of the dragonfly to this lovely kitchen with open fire – the perfect lifestyle! Lots to see here, including

Sarah Aplin – steampunk jewellry and hats
Kathy Laird – indoor and garden-friendly ceramics

17: Art Across the Line

Prezzie bunting, the scent of mulled wine and the family ‘at home’ welcome us into a house that loves painting and print. Something for everyone.

43: Forty Two

As night fell we visited our last house of the weekend, to see fashions, banners, publishing and print. Vintage-style elegance with embroidered and beaded dresses and knitwear, witty sayings on banners and prints and quirky independent books made a satisfying end to our first Christmas 2014 Artists’ Open Houses weekend.

Second weekend

The Wolf At The Door

We began with a pop up one-weekend-only show at The Wolf At The Door, a well established Hove venue, not in the brochure. Together with gifts, jewellery and small scale paintings in a relaxed and sociable atmosphere, The Beach Hut writers group presented a table of novels and non fiction [I bought one].

Jill Tattersall – wintry Brighton scenes, especially the Leap Year Walk assemblage
Campoli and Nelson – sleekly modern silver and glass jewellry

14: Tessa Wolf Murray & Guests

Tessa’s well known open house showcases her distinguished ceramics work. Larger vases, wall plaques and clocks team with jewellry, quirky buttons and cards with their own little sparkly ceramic brooches.
Fleur Grenier – small scale pewter Christmas decorations and vases, and I loved the lavish pewter mistletoe hanging spray
Cliff Wright – the ‘Harry Potter’ cover artist showing some captivating children’s book illustrations
Mulled wine for a donation to Amnesty

18: Cecil Rice

Cecil Rice

Cecil Rice

Another well established house, watercolour artist Cecil Rice captures sun, light, buildings and sea in his almost – deserted studies inspired by his travels to India and Venice, and his home town of Brighton and Hove. Some new wintry scenes, plus prints, training courses and DVDs for Christmas.

19: Art at Wick Hall

Through St Anne’s Wells Gardens to 1930s Poirot country now, at this elegant Art Deco apartment block. Along the painting-lined hall to vintage jewellry designs, multicoloured clusters of tiny enamelled copper bowls and some more mulled wine.

21: Christmas Boutique

Always fun, this friendly haven of craft and vintage style is hung with bunting and reclaimed flowered china mosaics, with Kate Brinsley’s miniature ceramic village pieces, Christmas decorations and tableware the star of the show.

22: Antfox Gallery

John Hancock

John Hancock

The brochure should read ‘former Embassy Cinema’ – this row of houses and a shop was once one of Hove’s many little cinemas, now converted to modern living. The shape of the cinema entrance can just be seen in the sitting room of this open house, featuring witty takes on old masters. Loved John Hancock’s tranquil nude ‘A Mirror In Brussels’ A glass of wine and a chat with owner and cat before moving on.

23: Mews Art Studio

Tucked away next to St Andrew’s church opposite the Iron Duke pub is this busy working studio/workshop, mainly showing ceramics, together with jewellry, paintings, photography and prints. Always interesting to see the artists’ workspace and inspirations, too.

End of the second weekend.
