Robertson Yard Studios

Just round the corner from The Dog House is Robertson Road. It's impossible to miss the imposing blue garage door between two terraced houses, and many people have no doubt wondered what lies beyond this enigmatic barrier. Perhaps an old junk yard strewn with intriguing artefacts from another time - and in some ways you wouldn't be far wrong, for beyond the door is a revelation, and one of Brighton's best kept secrets.

Walk through the cavernous entrance, past the houses, and into the space between the back gardens and the railway line, you find yourself in Robertson Yard - a collection of studios hidden from the street. It's been a place of creative activity for many years; kiln firing, welding, pottery are all here. There's even a tree house.

Vintage sheds and garages, some monumental metal pieces and a brand new chalet studio are dotted about the yard, and there you will find ceramics, painting, metalwork, caricatures and textiles.

You can see a selection of each artist's work, set within their own work spaces. There's a great atmosphere here, and a rare chance to visit these working studios, inhabited every day by a thriving community of artists.
